Sometimes we take advice from "experts" who are further down the path than we are. This is a valuable thing to do, as long we can see that their advice is simply their perspective, from the past. What can happen if we are not careful, is we can let their perspective become our law. As with anything, we need to remember that we have a choice to do things in a different way, in our own way.
If we automatically take past experiences as truth and live by them, then we will never be able to create anything new. Our work is to sense when a new possibility or a new perspective, one of possibility and from the present moment, would serve us better. The way we know something serves us better is if aligning ourselves with it opens up a sensation of truth- the kind that both settles us into a sense of ease and elevates us into feeling of elation or contentment.
There is always something for us to learn from the past- both our own and the past of another. Sometimes we learn what to keep doing, sometimes we need to carry forward a practice or a belief that has worked before. It is always our work to stay tuned in and noticed when the old is no longer serving us, or isn't right for us. Just because someone else said it to you, doesn't mean it's for you.
