What if you woke up each day and resolved to do the hard work first? The thing that you know is the most important, and therefore you will resist the most? It is in fact the resistance that shows up that will let you know you have identified the right thing.
We have gotten so skilled at doing the things that are distracting, urgent, and not important, that we often don’t even realize we are doing it. This is because your resistance wants you to keep your attention on these things so you never get to the important things that would start to change things.
The only way to get the hard, important work done is to be honest with yourself. What is it that you know is important to you to do, that you also know your resistance will try to stop you from doing? Do that thing, and do it first today. No matter what your resistance says, do that thing. You know your resistance will try to stop you, so simply don’t listen.
Just like any new skill, this will be hard at first and will become easier over time. When you become great at doing the hard thing first, imagine what else will be possible for you. What will you do with the freed up time and energy that you usually spend resisting the important things you know you could do.
Sometimes the important thing will be doing the presentation or the project. Some days it will be starting the conversation. Sometimes it will be starting a new venture. Sometimes it will be asking to be funded. Sometimes it will be getting yourself to your yoga mat or to the gym. The only thing keeping you from doing that thing is your own resistance, and you have the power to listen to something different.
