Why set goals and have a vision for yourself? If you don’t, you are fulfilling someone else’s goals and/ or living in a reaction to everyone else. Most of the time we are living the goals and vision of our spouses, our bosses, our parents, or living in a reaction to their goals and vision, and we are largely unaware of it. This leads to resentment, resignation, burnout, and boredom. When we are stuck fulfilling the goals of others, resisting the agendas of others, or reacting to everything that happens on the news or in our family, we end up suppressed and angry. Could it even be that it is a lack of people having a clear vision for their lives and contribution that has caused a lot of the conflict we are experiencing in the world right now?
Knowing what YOU are up to in your life gives you a place to respond to life from. It gives you a way to stay connected to your best self and do the creative, unexpected thing that uplifts and enriches your life and the lives of the people around you.
It won’t work anymore to say you don’t know what you want. No one else can know what you want except you. Stop using the excuse that you don’t know or you don’t know how. Your goals and your vision don’t have to be perfect and set in stone. They will always be changing. It is a practice and a discipline. It’s not cool anymore to not care. Your life is too important to spend living someone else’s vision, believing that you don't know, or pretending that you don't care.
Yes, it takes responsibility and risk to own and say what you want, and it is the only way you can start have a say about what impact you make while you are alive and what other people will remember about you once you are gone. We are about to move into a new year. Take a few minutes (or hours) today to pause and get clear on what you want. Get responsible, take a risk, and have some fun. This is your year and your life.
